SUMMARY:Tribal Talks: Breaking Boundaries
DESCRIPTION:This event is the last of three sponsored by CWC-Jackson\, the WY Humanities Council\, the WY Cultural Trust Fund\, and the Teton County Library.  The other dates are March 2 and March 23. \nJacki Klancher\, CWC’s Professor of Environmental Science and Health and CWC students Aidan Hereford and Antoine Day present “New Voices: from Everest Base Camp to the Continental Divide.” \nThe CWC student team was comprised of four Indigenous students: Jada Antelope\, Aidan Darissa Hereford\, Red Thunder Spoonhunter\, Antoine Day\, and one non-Indigenous first-generation student Ryan Towne.  \nThe journey was sponsored by Wyoming EPSCOR\, Rocky Mountain Alliance for Minority Participation\, and the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium.  This team paired with MeteoTracker technology manufacturers to test portable climate sensors. This talk will describe the rationale behind this effort and how it relates to alpine conditions in Wyoming. \n  \nThe venue will be the Teton Library Auditorium in Jackson\, WY. This announcement will be updated as the date grows closer.

SUMMARY:ARSONIST\, a play by J. Goldfinger & produced by Relative Theatrics
DESCRIPTION:This play is part of the 2023 Shepard Symposium.  This tale is inspired by Electra — daughter of Kind Agamemnon in Greek mythology.  We have a father-daughter arson team on the run in the Everglades. “The play is a meditation on the themes of life and death\, the power of nature over humanity\, and the ties that bind father to daughter.”  \nRelative Theatrics (RT) — founded in August 2013 by Anne Mason —  performances take place on the stage of the historic Gryphon Theatre.   Seating is limited to 50 for an intimate theatre-going experience. \nThe play is performed at the Gryphon Theatre in the Laramie Civic Center a little to the SE of campus — see map below. \n

SUMMARY:SCOTUS hears Pugin v. Garland + Garland v. Cordero-Garcia
DESCRIPTION:Two cases will be heard together.  Both hinge on the definition or understanding of “obstruction of justice.”  Specifically\, may an offense after or before a legal procedure count as an obstruction to that procedure?  Both defendants were long-time — 1985 and 1964\, respectively — legal permanent residents in the US.   Both were being removed from the US for offenses after the procedures. \nCongress codified the meaning of obstruction of justice in 1996.  Does this supersede this legal phrase as used earlier\, e.g.\, the 1893 decision  “obstruction can only arise when justice is being administered?” \n \nBoth sides refer to Title 18\, Chapter 73 of the U.S. Code.  Title 18 is the unit concerning Crimes & Criminal Procedures while Chapter 73 within Title 18 discusses Obstruction of Justice using 21 sections\, each discussing an example of obstruction. SUMMARY:Ratification of 17th Amendment about the Popular Vote
DESCRIPTION:Amendment 17 passes in 1913.  Its text appears below. \nOriginally state legislators chose congressional senators. A striking example of how dysfunctional this process could be comes from Delaware 1895.  Their legislators were completely deadlocked and Delaware didn’t have a senator for two years. Read more>>> \n \nThe Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State\, elected by the people thereof\, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures. \nWhen vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate\, the executive authority of such State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided\, That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct. \nThis amendment shall not be so construed as to affect the election or term of any Senator chosen before it becomes valid as part of the Constitution.

SUMMARY:Reading Jackie: her autobiography in books
DESCRIPTION:The National First Ladie’s Library sponsors this zoom event and it’s one of their monthly Legacy Lectures.  In describing both the book and this lecture\, author William Kuhn writes:  \nShe was a book editor in New York for nearly two decades from 1975 to 1994. During this time she worked on a hundred book projects. These books shed unique light on her personality: her tastes\, her interests\, and her hidden identity as a reader. We can read her character and her personality by looking at the projects she chose–and some she wished she could choose not–to do. \n \nYou’ve missed the original showing but it is recorded for your viewing any time>>>
