SUMMARY:Anniversary of the 13th Amendment Abolishing Slavery
DESCRIPTION:Ratified on December 6\, 1865\, this Amendment was the first of three called the “Civil War Amendments.”  A tug-of-war between Congress and the Supreme Court ensued where SCOTUS claimed that Congress exceeded its powers with the enforcement section and that stating that private discrimination was not slavery.  The text of the Amendment is below.  \nSection 1 \nNeither slavery nor involuntary servitude\, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted\, shall exist within the United States\, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. \n\n\n \nSection 2 \n\n\n \nCongress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

SUMMARY:Thanksgiving
DESCRIPTION:The Constitutional Congress declared this a holiday once the Constitution was signed in 1798.  However\, the idea was backtracked to be left to each state to decide.  At the time it was celebrated with prayer and some thought that the Federal government best not dictate religious holidays. \nFun fact:  President Franklin D. Roosevelt tried to extend the Christmas shopping holiday by moving Thanksgiving from the 4th Thursday to the 3rd Thursday in November.  Not all states wanted the change and in 1941 Congress made it law to celebrate Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday.

SUMMARY:Veterans' Day
DESCRIPTION:Initiated on the first anniversary of the 1918 signing of the Armistice\, November 11 became a federal holiday in 1938.  First called Armistice Day\, in 1954 it was renamed Veterans’ Day.  A version of remembrance is held in Commonwealth countries and Europe.  Because of a celebrated WWI poem about Flanders Fields\, red poppies symbolized the soldiers who sacrificed their lives.  Since the November US holiday remembers living veterans\, poppies are worn on Memorial Day — the last Monday in May — the day when the US honors its fallen soldiers. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Since Washington’s reelection in 1792\, presidential elections are held in even years.  It wasn’t until after the US Civil War that legislative elections were (mostly) held in even years as well.  Cost and turnout are the main reasons for aligning elections at the same time.  With few exceptions–MS\, KY\, NJ\, LA\, and VI–state and federal elections are not held in odd years.  Mostly\, these states wanted to avoid Federal intervention and troops overseeing their elections. \nBelow is a schematic of the House seating in 1872.  Red is Republican\, but back then the party had split into two

DESCRIPTION:Vote Early Day was founded by MTV as a new civic holiday.  The plan was to help every voter know how\, where\, and when they can vote early.   It was launched at the start of the covid-19 years and voting early and from home took on new importance.  In 2020 MTV was joined by 134 premier partners and 2\,700 general partners from every state in the nation.
