SUMMARY:Braver Angels debate: Improve the vote? Ranked-choice voting?
DESCRIPTION:Registration is required: register here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIs our current system the best we can do? Can we “Improve the Vote?” Are there ways to make our elections more fair\, and to give voters a greater say in who is chosen?  \nSome states have adopted ranked-choice voting\, a method where voters use a rank to order candidates or options—in a sequence from first\, second\, third\, and onwards—on their ballots. \nSpeakers (in alphabetical order): \n\n\n\n\nJohn Aldrich Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Duke University. Aldrich is known for several books and articles on various topics including political parties\, partisanship\, and electoral systems. \nBarry Fagin Professor of Computer Science and a Senior Fellow at the Independence Institute in Denver\, CO. He is the author of scholarly papers on a wide variety of scientific and social topics\, including ranked choice voting. \nScott Kendall  Attorney\, former Chief of Staff to the Governor of Alaska\, and Senior Advisor at the Institute for Political Innovation. Kendall is known for his work drafting and defending a 2020 Ballot Measure in Alaska.  \nJohn Ketcham  Director of state and local policy at the Manhattan Institute.  \nNathan Lockwood is Executive Director of Rank the Vote. He was highly involved in the movement for voter choice in Massachusetts.  \nHans von Spakovsky is a Senior Legal Fellow in The Heritage Foundation and also serves as Manager of The Heritage Foundation’s Election Law Reform Initiative. He studies and writes about a variety of topics including voter fraud and voter ID\, enforcement of federal voting rights laws\, and administration of elections. \n\n\n\n\nA Braver Angels debate is a conversation in which a group of people think together\, listen carefully to one another\, and allow themselves to be touched and perhaps changed by each other’s ideas.  This file might help you understand the debate process that we use.

DESCRIPTION:Fifty years after Tennessee’s ratification of the 19th Amendment\, Betty Friedan and the National Organization for Women organized a nationwide Women’s Strike for Equality. There were rallies in 90 cities and towns but most memorable were the 50\,000 who marched down Fifth Avenue in NYC. \nA year later\, on August 26\, Representative Bella Abzug (D-NY) introduced a bill making August 26th Women’s Equality Day.  Bella inspired many.  Her hallmark was a wide-brimmed hat with which she commanded authority.

SUMMARY:Ratification of 19th Amendment about Women's Suffrage
DESCRIPTION:The 19th Amendment passed in 1920.  Its text is concise and appears below. \n“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”  Read more>>> \n \n  \nThe Woman Suffrage Amendment was first introduced on January 10\, 1878. The bill needed to be approved by two-thirds of the states.   On August 24\, 1920\, Tennessee became 36th and final state to ratify the amendment\, which passed by only one vote. \nThat one vote belonged to Harry Burn\, who might well have voted no except for his mother’s letter urging him to do Carrie Chapman Catt a favor.  Wyoming women gained the vote 50 years earlier in 1869.
