DESCRIPTION:As per Mary Mountain\, Executive Director of the WY Women’s History House:   \n \n\n\n\nLast year\, it took just a couple of hours in our small spaces so we really don’t need a mob of volunteers. Half a dozen volunteers or so work well\, so if those of you who’ve helped before–in the courtyard and in the HH–can make it\, great! I’ll have coffee\, juice and some morning sweets of some kind.\n\n\n\nContact Mary director@wyomingwomenshistoryhouse.info if you wish to help.  Mary also invites volunteers to help decorate at the Ivinson Mansion on December 9.\n

SUMMARY:Ratification 13th Amendment\, Abolish Slavery
DESCRIPTION:Ratified on December 6\, 1865\, this Amendment was the first of three called the “Civil War Amendments.”  A tug-of-war between Congress and the Supreme Court ensued where SCOTUS claimed that Congress exceeded its powers with the enforcement section and that stating that private discrimination was not slavery.  The text of the Amendment is below.  \nSection 1 \nNeither slavery nor involuntary servitude\, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted\, shall exist within the United States\, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. \n  \nSection 2 \nCongress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

DESCRIPTION:Why would the men of the WY territory decide to grant suffrage in their first constitution? Some were lonely. In 1869\, the territory had over 6\,000 adult males and only 1\,000 females. Area men hoped women would be more likely to settle if granted the right to vote. \nThe wife of William Bright\, a territorial legislator\, argued denying women the vote was unjust. The territorial secretary\, Edward M. Lee\, wanted his mother to vote. If African-American males already had suffrage\, then so should his mother.  Read more>>>

DESCRIPTION:Again\, this event is thanks to Mary Mountain\, Executive Director of the History House.  As Mary describes it: \nJane Ivinson\n\n\n\nWe’ll have treats and community and student musicians and choirs and of course\, the decor around the HH. Our first ad for the HOH ran in the Unexpected Company’s program and a 2nd one is part of a large story-ad coming out Thanksgiving week. I’m hoping we can have a nice group of visitors coming and going to see our decor and history as they also check out the bigger museums that same day. I’d love to have some of us in historic dress throughout the day (I’ll dress as Mrs. I or someone)\, so if you’d be willing to come for a bit as one of our women or men of history anytime from 10-3:00 that day\, that’d be great!\n
