Sophistry is a good word to learn today: reasoning that seems true but is false.

Defense Secretary Hegseth has revived a sophistry about women in combat. He implied that women don’t meet standards of fitness and strength needed to be fully integrated. Worse is his implication that the military has “struggled in modern wars” because of the lowered standards.

The article offers a list of short-lived modern wars lacking “struggle” and a reasoned description of how training has changed in the past 30 years: it is designed to match what the troupe might need to do.
