Fifty years after Tennessee’s ratification of the 19th Amendment, Betty Friedan and the National Organization for Women organized a nationwide Women’s Strike for Equality. There were rallies in 90 cities and towns but most memorable were the 50,000 who marched down Fifth Avenue in NYC.

A year later, on August 26, Representative Bella Abzug (D-NY) introduced a bill making August 26th Women’s Equality Day.  Bella inspired many.  Her hallmark was a wide-brimmed hat with which she commanded authority.
