Nebraska will not accept federal money that would provide low-income families with an extra $40/month.  The program was started as one of the COVID-19 programs.  In response to many critics, Governor Kim Reynolds said, “I don’t believe in welfare.”  The costs to Nebraska would have been $300,000 and the benefits to the families would have been $18M.  Another program that provides summer meals and snacks requires families to travel to the sites.

Jenni Benson, president of the Nebraska State Education Association, was among those claiming that this decision was out of character.  She said, ““Why would we even question that people and children deserve food?”  Read more>>>
