A book written by Sociologist Matthew Desmond appeared in March 2023. It coincided with a steep rise in housing shortages since 2022. The standard of living has increased but owning a cell phone, a microwave oven, and a TV doesn’t imply prosperity.
Since 1996, states have received federal aid in block grants and have considerable leeway. For example, in 2020 only 22% of the federal money budgeted by TANF went to poor families. Nonetheless, 85% of SNAP money went directly to food stamps and 93% of Medicaid went to healthcare. Unable to buy or borrow, the poor renters and homeless among us are vulnerable and exploited.
