The case started with a 2021 memo from AG Garland that set up meetings with state and local law enforcement in an effort to discourage threats of violence and possibly prosecute when necessary.  Parents challenged the policy on 1st Amendment grounds.  Judges in two lower courts rejected their arguments before SCOTUS received and then rejected hearing the case.

Parents from Loudin County, VA, and Saline, MI, brought the suit forward.  Loudin County is a populous community with nearly a half million residents, while Saline is much smaller with almost 9000 residents.  In Loudin County, parents complain about the security of their children in schools, while in Saline the divide seems very partisan.

The Loudoun County School Board meeting erupted in chaos Tuesday night after Loudoun County School Board Chair Melinda Mansfield cut off several parents who spoke at the meeting . (7News)
