1890 Wyoming becomes the 44th state.  This was 20 years after the first year of women’s suffrage in the state, and at first the Congress pushed the Territory to remove suffrage from its Constitution as a condition for statehood.  The state of Utah made several attempts to become a state with suffrage, but was denies.  The Wyoming Women’s History House in Laramie proudly displays the WY response painted on its wall,

“[We shall] remain out of the Union one hundred years rather than come in without the women”.

During the 1880s, virtually the entire female population in Wyoming voted.  Also in 1880, Mary Bellamy became the first women elected to a legislature.

In 1887, Utah revoked its suffrage and its Church renounced polygamy in 1890. Those two issues account for efforts to become a state spanning four decades.  In 1896 gained statehood.
