August 18, 2023 @ 12:00 am 12:00 pm

The 19th Amendment passed in 1920.  Its text is concise and appears below.

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”  Read more>>>

The Woman Suffrage Amendment was first introduced on January 10, 1878. The bill needed to be approved by two-thirds of the states.   On August 24, 1920, Tennessee became 36th and final state to ratify the amendment, which passed by only one vote.

That one vote belonged to Harry Burn, who might well have voted no except for his mother’s letter urging him to do Carrie Chapman Catt a favor.  Wyoming women gained the vote 50 years earlier in 1869.
