Juneteenth

June 19 All day

On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Texas to ensure that enslaved people be freed.  President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation  more than two years earlier.  Since the proclamation did not include border and rebel areas, slavery for African Americans had not yet ended in Texas.

Fast forward to 1979, and Texas declared June 19 a state holiday.  In 2021 it became a national holiday.
