In 1953, the Federal government delisted 100 tribes (the Termination Policy) in an effort to break up reservatios. The American Indian Movement (AIM) was founded in a jail in 1968, and AIM decided to take their complaints directly to the people using nedia. Events were staged for such rallies, e.g., capturing Alcatraz, Mount Rushmore, and BIA Headquarters in DC.
The 1973 event was the seige on Wounded Knee in SW South Dakota. One leader, Leonard Peltier, was arrested and charged with killing two FBI agents. He has been in prison for nearly 50 years. Peltier is 80 years old and will soon be under home arrest for the rest of his life. Red more>>>
