The League of Women Voters of Wyoming will honor women who helped shape U.S. and
Wyoming history as part of the state celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary on Saturday,
July 4, at the Wyoming Capitol.

At 3 p.m., “The Remarkable Susan,” a one-act play by Tim Kelly, will bring to life the
story of suffragist Susan B. Anthony’s 1873 trial for the “crime” of casting a ballot. Set in an
upstate New York courtroom, the play follows Anthony as she challenges injustice, confronts
prejudice and transforms a predetermined verdict into a powerful call for equality and human
dignity.

Presented by the LWV of Wyoming in the Wyoming Capitol Extension Auditorium, this
free community production will feature a talented local cast. The play was originally written in
1973 for the 100th anniversary of Anthony’s historic trial.

“The Remarkable Susan” cast includes Brenda Lyttle as Susan B. Anthony; Caitlin
Harper as District Attorney Crowley; George Powers as defense attorney Henry Selden; Steve
Sharpe as Judge Hunt; Carey Hartmann as the journalist; Judy Schulz as the postmistress; Lily
Sharpe as Guelma Anthony; Anna Bechtel as Hannah Anthony; Joelle Ashley as Mary Anthony;
Danielle Schulz as the young girl; Marguerite Herman as woman No. 1; Lori Brand as woman
No. 2; Ashley Schulz as woman No. 3; Larry Barttelbort as man No. 1; Markus Dausses as man No. 2; Denise Burke as Esther Hobart Morris; Rosalind Schliske as Julia Bright; Mary Guthrie as
Amalia Post; Margaret Brown as Louisa Swain, and Marilyn Kite as her herself.

Following the performance at 3:30 p.m., a living history presentation will feature 24
Remarkable Women of Wyoming in the Capitol’s Extension hallway. With a free, colorful special
passport in hand, those attending the Capitol festivities can meet historical figures from across
Wyoming’s past, hear their stories, and collect passport stamps as they visit with each
remarkable woman.

This free program will offer a unique opportunity to explore the struggle for voting
rights, to learn about Wyoming’s pioneering women and to celebrate the individuals whose
courage and determination helped shape our state and nation.

Both presentations are made possible through the Wyoming Semiquincentennial
Planning Task Force’s Semiquincentennial Grant Program. “The Remarkable Susan” is
presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Dramatists Play Service.
Playwright Tim Kelly earned a master’s degree in playwriting from Yale University and
wrote more than 300 plays. He died in 1998, and the University of Wyoming’s American
Heritage Center holds a Tim Kelly Collection.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization working to
protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy.
